I had the same thing in Italy - every time I started to talk to someone in broken Italian, they'd instantly interrupt to restart the conversation in immaculate English. Smug bastards, the lot of them. The worst I think was a snotty little teen at a pizza place who didn't let me get more than a couple of words out before barking "No, in English!" and then proceeding to get our order wrong. Probably on purpose...
