I like the red but then again my sitting room is that colour.

Light. You need light. In the sense that we all need light.

dark blue.

That is true, but oh I do like lovely rich colours that look like you could eat them up.

It's from ten years of renting and never being able to paint anything. Now I have the opportunity, I feel I must paint something a stupid colour. It's like coming out of college unable to say no to free beer, even if you can easily afford to buy your own.

Those are the colors of my hallway, living room, and kitchen (from left to right).

Of the three, I like the red best. But I like them all.

That's kinda spooky-cool. I presume you're leaving out the safe-but-boring-cream?

Ooooops. I didn't even really spot it! Cream is ok. If you like that sort of thing.

My room was fairly dark, so I painted it white and did stencils on it so it looks like
this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/18285478@N00/20138151/). Its shitty if you make a room too dark.

It's hard to like, exactly, or have feelings for beyond 'meh', but I thought I might do one wall in it.

That's pretty. Starfish?

What colour was it to start with?

Actually, most of my living room is cream, but because I have a through-lounge, there are three bits of wall that are set back behind the two chimney breasts. We've painted the recessed bit red on the biggest one (it's a bad photo, but it gives you an idea), and are planning to get around to the other two parts eventually. But it does give the impression that my living room is red, even though it's actually mostly cream.

You have the right of veto on any colour you think is too far into the realms of stupid :)

Nice. But your description seems to support the feeling I'm getting that a little red goes a long way.

I'm deliberatly fighting down any reactions I've got, on the grounds that whatever taste I may claim to have, I don't trust it :-)

Also, if you're interested:

hallway (the blue is much darker than it looks in the photo; the flash lightened it quite a lot.

kitchen (the walls were originally yellow with these blue tiles, which looked surprisingly nice, but we painted them the same blue because it needed paint anyway.

Oh yes. But also, a little red is a beautiful thing.

In case you're interested in the rest of the catalogue, our bedroom is sage green (no photo unfortunately), and our bathroom is currently a hideous pink (we inherited it and haven't fixed it yet).

I think the red would be a bit over-powering for a bedroom, if it was everywhere. Red does that. But our bedroom is a deep purple, and in the last house we had it was a dark blue. I would vote for a dark blue (from those) but for one with a touch more grey in it, so it's softer and more forgiving. With gloss white woodwork. Num.

FWIW, out living-room is not far from your sensible pale blue, there. Ourt downstairs hallway is red, and upstairs is a dark-ish (but not that dark) blue. The study still has plaster walls. Oops.

Safe but boring cream forces you to get interesting paintings and wallhangings.

Dark blue is good for rooms that don't need to be brightly lit, such as bedrooms or rooms that I'm going to be in.

I have many such, but I can't help but think that they'd look even cooler on a darker background. Especially a red one, actually.

Aye, I'd second the possibility of the overpowering nature of really strong colours. One of the houses I lived in had 'womb' coloured walls, and felt very dark and overwhelming.

That's not to say the colours are bad, just they might need a little moderation. Either that, or perhaps very bright lighting...

I can't stand cream walls, incidentally. I've lived in rented places for too long now, and cream is the universal dull colour for walls.

I was going to say that, actually. My friend who is quite into her interior decorating has painted every room cream + a strong bright colour (on one or two walls, or in the case of the hall, up to dado-rail level).
