The way to do it, I said to myself, is to have intentions but hold them lightly; know where you want to go but don“t panic if something else starts happening; leave room for serendipity; float downstream yadda yadda yadda.

(I am actually made slightly nervous by the fact that I have so much of the upcoming 4 months planned fairly closely. It's unavoidable, because so much of it requires the booking of train tickets which I can't risk not being available when I need them (or in the case of China, my visa requires evidence of tickets in & out, & somewhere to sleep every night), but I preferred what I did in India, where I just got tickets & found accommodation as I went along. Vietnam-Singapore will be like that, though. And I have potential get-outs built in to the various cycle-touring plans.)
