Yeah, the whole Trans-Sib thing needs an awful lot of pre-planning. Ivan and I actually went through a package tour company (The Russia Experience). But I hadn´t actually booked anything firmly on this trip except for the hotel on the first night, just made advance enquiries, and I´m really glad I didn´t because the bag faff and waiting around would have cocked up all the upcoming plans in a domino effect. And I´ve been able to take opportunities that came along.
I think both ways to travel have their advantages, mind. And the first is better in bureaucracy-heavy countries like the ones along the Trans-Sib where it´d be a massive headache to try and wing it, and they could conceivably hold you up for a month while waiting for some jobsworth to put a rubber stamp on some form or other.
