I'd been looking at him across the table, thinking how wrong it seemed for us not to be together. Background party noise faded to a distant roar. "I have never..." broke in our mutual friend, adding something quite pertinent to both of us. Eyes locked, we raised our glasses and drank.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] verlaine, who took the photos, put up with several hours of me stamping about and swearing at two different cameras, and is a librarian today (hurrah!)

The other campers all went home on Sunday morning. I stayed on with my mother, in our suddenly solitary caravan. The guitars were gone, the radios were gone, the tapestry of voices had unravelled, and all that was left was wind blowing through the sea grass and rabbits reclaiming their territory. I felt as fragile and empty as a blown eggshell.
