You arrive at the training centre to hear that you won't get any. You will learn by doing. They hustle you on to a high platform. Wind whistles in your ears as you gaze out at the rope stretched across a chasm so deep you can see clouds halfway down. Walk, they say, go on, walk.

They phoned the builders that afternoon, who visited first thing next morning

'Ere, mate, is your gravitational field supposed to be variable like that? Yeah, variable. VARIABLE. Look: fumbles in pocket, brings up a couple of coins. Holds arm outstretched to the left and lets go of a coin. It hangs there, as if unsure of what to do, then starts inching its way towards the ground. Yeah, but watch.... Holds arm outstretched to the right and lets go of another. It races downwards and shatters on impact, leaving a crater behind. See: variable. It ain't supposed to be like this, is it? The manager stares at the crater. 'T'salright mate, I won't stick that quid on your bill.

Heh. Meanwhile, the oneword character hangs in the air nearby, kicking her legs like a cartoon and shouting for help, but no one can hear her because the patch of air she's in has different sound properties as well as weird gravity...
