The village hall was always draughty and freezing, lit with flickering, cheerless neon. The uniform was thin and chilly. I hoped we would learn to light a fire or at the very least tie knots, but all we ever did was march from the hall to the church and back, usually in the rain, while I mused on how silly the word 'woggle' was.
