We'll have been very near you, then. It used to lead up to Muswell Hill train station, of which there is virtually no sign now. It's a great walk. I'm particularly fond of the derelict platforms at Highgate, where I seem to remember dickon_edwards had a load of photos taken.
At Highgate? Do you mean Crouch Hill? (I *think* that's what it's called.)
We'll soon know, in any case, because I took some pictures around there too and will probably be posting them later. I have a special liking for the place too. It makes me feel like I'm in a post-apocalyptic London which has gone back to nature.
At Highgate tube, when you walk down the new non-slip path from the road to Muswell Hill, you can see derelict platforms to your right, overgrown with foliage, flora and fungi. The trains went to Finsbury Park in one direction, and Ally Pally in the other.
A man walked the route and took pix, but didn't get one of the Highgate platforms. But you can see Dickon lying on them.
