Does anyone know of a good downloadable word processor that will run on a Mac (OSX) and get on well with Word files? Or is that a tall order?

Edit: I've downloaded OpenOffice and will be upgrading to Panther as soon as possible. Thanks to everyone for your help!

[livejournal.com profile] knirirr keeps talking about something called Open Office, that he swears would be able to read my word files if I gave it a chance. It is a linux thing, so ought to work on a mac, non? I will ask him...

Believe it or not, but TextEdit (as supplied with OS X) can read Word files.

I haven't had any problems with the standard works prog that comes with OSX if that's any help?

Yep, everybody's right - Open Office.

I don't think Jarte does Word files, just text and RTF ones.

It's quite easy to obtain a 'free' version of Microsoft Office for OS X. Not that I'm proposing you do such a thing. Goodness, no.
