I don't think I qualify as Chinese scholar extradonaire! I have a terrible pronunciation and my listening skills need quite a bit of work. I think I'm going to study quite a bit more before I attempt any trips there. But I do really want to go someday. It sounds like you had a good time despite the language barrier.
Just one thing, it's considered quite naughty to refer to Chinese characters as Kanji, that's for Japanese, matter of national pride and all that. The chinese words are Hanzi.
