Man with slight limp in the Inner Bookshop (your one-stop shop for everything from green politics to astral projection) yesterday, to a cashier: "Why is it that the only thing you can stub is your toe?"

Why indeed.

And I've been looking into getting myself a tent. Blacks in Central Oxford have a window display of Ted Baker designer tents. The design consists of having "Ted Baker" written all over them. There are Ted Baker folding chairs and sleeping bags as well. The slogan is "Stay In Your Comfort Zone". Way to miss the point. I'd like to stub their toes very hard on the point. But you can't stub someone else's toe, can you? Hmm.

You can stub (out) a cigarette.

I think 'stub' and 'stub out' have to be considered separately, though. Can you stub a cigarette?

I reckon that if you attempt to stub out a cigarette but it does not go out, then you have stubbed it. (Not that I've ever heard this usage...)

Yes, when incompetently trying to catch a cricket ball.

OED has 12 different senses of 'stub, v(1)', of which only "stub one's toe" and "stub out" have post-1920 cites. Interesting.

Forget tents, what you want is a teepee! I am considering purchasing one for the Electric Picnic.

Touchwood camping, down by Redbridge park and ride, has just closed down.
There's another "outdoors" shop opened in the same area though. And, given the area, I think it's probably on the same property (there not being any other properties down there that a shop can be put on). Can give you a lift down for a look-see, if you like.

I believe you can stub any extremities given the right (wrong) circumstances.

I can only assume Ted Baker have been watching the last Harry Potter film a little too closely...

If considering buying a tent, might I steer you in the direction of the Bonzo Dog Band song of the same name? Give you some unusual ideas for things to use it for...

On an unrelated matter, are you likely to be in Oxford on Bank Holiday Monday? I am toying with dropping into the city on my way eastwards, as part of my generally silly travel plans. Would be good to see you if you are - probably around lunchtime through late afternoon, if this part happens...
