This is the mailshot I've been sending out to artists. It's only really relevant if you live in or near Oxford - soz. Well, we could possibly stretch a point if you can get artwork to me by the 27th of March or so and take it away again afterwards if no one's bought it :)

Things on the Wall*: The Oxfringe Art Show
29 March to 6 April 2008

Oxfringe is a new fringe festival running alongside the Oxford Literary Festival. It began last year with literary events, but this year we've grown and diversified into drama, comedy, music and art as well as literature. We're running a wide range of events throughout Oxford during the week of the Festival with an emphasis on local talent. More information can be found at www.oxfringe.com, or you can phone us on 0870 8033475.

We invite Oxfordshire-based artists to submit work to be hung in the first ever Oxfringe art exhibition. Please send an electronic image of the work to deirdre at oxfringe dot com with "Oxfringe Art Show" included in the subject line of the message. The Oxfringe committee will select artworks to be part of the exhibition. Due to limited space we can't guarantee that your work will be exhibited, but we will try to fit in as many submissions as possible - and we'll only be taking one work from each artist, but feel free to send us several to choose from.

Work will be hung in the Brian Duke Foyer of the Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building and in the Age Concern @183 Internet Bookshop on Cowley Road. (The Jacqueline Du Pre is open daily throughout the festival, the bookshop from Monday to Saturday.) If exhibition visitors wish to buy your art the staff at both locations are happy to handle the transactions. If your work is selected we will contact you with more details.

Maximum size of work is 1 metre squared (sorry, we can't accommodate 3D works this year, though we hope it'll be possible at next year's Fringe) - though smaller pieces have a somewhat better chance of being fit in.

If you know of other artists you think might be interested in submitting a piece, please do pass this on.

Please submit images of your work by Monday March 17th at the latest. Thanks!

If, theoretically speaking, I had written a short (half hour) play, and wanted to put it on for Oxfringe '09, who would I speak to?

Hmmm, I am intrigued!

If you wanted to put on this theoretical play, you'd theoretically be best off mailing info at oxfringe dot com, then Sarah or Heather, the theatre experts, would deal with it. Though I'd suggest holding off till after this year's is over as our collective heads are on the brink of exploding :)

Hey, I like the daftness of the Show Titles project!

My favourite was "Art About People And The Things They Do And Stuff", but I thought if I put that many words into a heading in the brochure you'd kill me.

:)

I rather like it, though the casualness of 'Things on the Wall' really appeals anyway. It's quite amusing listening to the woman having to read out some of the sillier titles.

Photographs: counting as art or not?

Date: 2008-02-29 04:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com
Absolutely do count. If it's a reasonably flat thing you've made which you can hang on a wall, it probably counts.

Cool - will point my youngest brother at this, then.

And I'd be thrilled to put something of yours up, too. Ah well!

Clearly we should just do our own down here :-)

You should indeed. Though these things do have a tendency to gobble up your life. In big hungry gulps, with sprinkles on top.

Would something that is very slightly 3D but mostly flat, whilst still being less than 1m squared, and that can happily hang on a wall, be allowed?

This also sounds intriguing. Send me pictures!

Certainly is. I must go and have a snoop round your journal now :)

poetry and pictures

I am already performing my poetry at Oxfringe. But I want people to se my art too. I am doing an installation on "Poetry and Pictures" on Thursday at The Abingdon Festival this week. But I would really like to connect my pictures with the poetry at the festival this year. I am also starting a big project with Age Concern on "poetry and pictures" on the Cowley Rd right now.Seems a good place to hang the work for me.

cheers

hi Nick - that sounds great. Please do send me an image of something you'd like hung at the exhibition and I'll make a note that you'd prefer to be hung in the bookshop. We'll have cards with artist details alongside each painting, so maybe yours could direct people to your poetry event? Also we're very interested in people who want to do events incorporating both poetry and art, and will be planning some for next year (possibly at the O3 Gallery). Unfortunately we've now printed our brochure so we can't add any more events, but this would definitely be something good for '09...

Did we meet at last year's Oxfringe? I think I have your business card!

Great. I will send you a couple of email images.
The fringe is taking off isn't it.
I think we did meet briefly last year. I was reading my stuff at the Blackwell's other fringe event.
It all got a bit confusing. Lost my password for Live journal
so long since I've been there.

I would like to have the poem on the wall next to the picture if possible.
I will send you some alternative ideas.

Come down to Abingdon on Thursday evening and see my show

You can see my work on www.trans-itions.co.uk.
cheers

Managed to reconnect with live journal

who knows you may recognise me as the David Beckham of your less pleasant dreams

Wish i had a better picture of you to be sure I can remember meeting you

Is this Live journal better than myspace and Facebook

most of my contacts are on flickr

I'd be interested in submitting this one (http://wax-and-wane.org/trad/07drawingdownthemoon.html), which is small enough to be postable. I also don't mind coming to Oxford to collect it - especially if I can coincide it with seeing you. If that sounds okay let me know and I'll do the electronic application thing.

Hi! Sorry for no response for ages. Still have no bloody net at home and barely any at work. But yes, please do submit (oooh, blue hair), and you'd be very welcome to come and hang out in Oxford :)

Can we send you stuff with the instruction to throw it away afterwards if no one wants it?
