the transparent society
Apr. 22nd, 2003 02:29 pmIt's like we all suddenly woke up with telepathy.
If you think you've found a private place to vent, you haven't.
If it's private now, it won't be for long.
Connections proliferate between sites and people. The natural tendency of the net is to become more connected, not less.
People you'd never expect to know each other know each other.
If someone doesn't know what you're doing, they will.
Every word you speak or write will spread, now or later.
Have you something you need to get off your chest, but can't say to their faces? If you say it, they will hear it. Imagine their faces as they hear it.
Friends locks and anonymous files are nothing but false comforts, like putting your hands over your eyes and thinking no one can see you.
Change your name if you like. Someone will still know it's you.
They're more interested in you than you think.
The walls are listening. Your mother is listening, your boss is listening, the one who got away is listening, the person you need to vent about is listening.
All the walls have turned to glass.
Think before you speak: you will have to stand over these words one day.
Think before you act: you can't hide.
Have you nothing to hide?
If you think you've found a private place to vent, you haven't.
If it's private now, it won't be for long.
