She was six years old but she wanted to be a detective like her father. She found a Wanted poster and thought it looked like her neighbour, and decided to hunt him down. She lay in the grass by the road for hours taking numberplates and looking for suspicious people. When she grew up, she was too short to be a policewoman.
'pitch'
black, coal black, glossy black like a beetle's body. on a football pitch. covered in pitch, sticky. tar and feathers. and the horse you came in on.
'cave'
caving under the pressure. my brain hurts. the phone rings and rings and rings in the background. i would like to be in the dark, under the ground, hearing a slow drip drip drip from water seepage, peaceful. cradled. away. deep down.
