This morning, walking home down Archway Road after a delicious post-party pancake breakfast with the last survivors of [livejournal.com profile] verlaine's birthday celebration, I almost tripped over a beautiful filmy length of white and pink material with gold embroidery, a good ten yards long, lying in the road with one end caught in a bush. We wondered where it had come from, but there didn't seem to be anyone around who might have had anything to do with it. After some discussion, I found myself walking on down with my arms full of glittery pink and white - only to come across five bin bags left out for collection, literally bursting at the seams with saris. Blue saris, purple saris, silver saris, sequinned or shimmery or embroidered in gold, all of them gorgeous and perfect. Why they were being chucked out I have no idea, but they very definitely were unwanted. But not by us. I gathered up as many as I could carry and staggered home, where there was much exclamation and admiration of the pretty shiny things, and Antonia showed me how to wear one without benefit of any safety pins whatsoever.

(For context, I had been thinking two things the previous day. First, that I was running out of stuff to ebay and didn't know if I'd have any luck selling stuff I'd made myself. Second, after reading [livejournal.com profile] inannajones talking about buying an altar cloth from Hickeys fabric shop in Dublin, I'd been regretting the fact that if you want fabric in London you have to mount an expedition, to Shepherd's Bush or similar.)

As some of you may know, I have also needed a desk/worktable ever since moving in here in February, but have never felt flush enough to buy myself one. Later this afternoon, heading for the tube to meet [livejournal.com profile] kesstrel, I found a small bright pink table sitting on the footpath with a sign on it saying "Please Take Me Home!". So I did.

Later on, I was going through the fabric pieces and taking pictures of them (some of which you can see here) when I discovered one I'd unwittingly picked up along with the others. It was a white tablecloth patterned with (some of you will get the significance of this) St Brigid's Crosses.

I stood there for a while staring at it and going "Bloody hell."

I feel very lucky these days. For a long time it seemed that anything good had to be achieved very deliberately and at great expense of money, pain and effort, but these days I feel like good things are falling out of the sky to land at my feet. At last I feel like I'm thriving, not just surviving. And I'm very, very thankful.

I don't need more fabric. Really I don't. Not even beautiful sari fabric... Argh. Might need to give in and get an e-bay account ;-) Looking forward to the rest when you put them up! (Especially anything red and gold, since those are our wedding colours. In fact, if there are any red and gold ones, how do you feel about selling direct to me, for whatever price you think appropriate?)

And, of course, I'm glad to hear of your stupendous good fortune - you deserve it! <hugs>

There's no red and gold, sadly... there's a sort of burgundy and cream one, though. Hmm.

You fool! That's how they infiltrate!

If you're smothered in your sleep by an Ikean invader scout, don't say I didn't warn you!

Our house has already been comprehensively infiltrated by Ikea. I think they've concluded that we're of more use to them alive than dead.

This just proves good things happen to the deserving.

Thank you for being the hostess with the mostest!

I do want to see how feasible it is to generate bill/food money from them, but it seems appropriate to pass on some of the random good luck. I think you might like the pink/white one, and there's also a purple one...
