I had it all planned out. I had plot outlines, a map of connections between the characters, the lot. But last night, after about five hours of wanting to get writing and instead staring blankly into space, I caved in.

I wrote 2000ish words of a story called 'Gratuitous Word Sink'.

In which I write myself into the novel and wander around running into the characters, asking them what they plan to do next, in between liberal helpings of stream-of-consciousness.

I'm afraid to look at it today.

The back garden is covered in autumn leaves, curly and golden yellow. This morning I woke up early to rain and more leaves pelting down on my window. It was glorious to fall back asleep, cosy, indoors.

Outside the study-room window are more fabulously coloured trees. Yesterday morning there was thick fog, with yet more trees appearing mysteriously out of it as I came down the Archway Road.

This time last year was grindingly awful. I worked in a noisome basement, never seeing daylight, and came home to a draughty box in an ugly part of town. This year I'm actually enjoying it. It's the trees that make all the difference. Remind me of this when I whine about the cost of my flat.

Yes, I know :)

But I have to work that Thursday and Friday, and it would probably mean coming back here for two days of work before returning to Ireland for Christmas...

Compare and contrast the two flatmate's approach to their house:

Yesterday when searching for law books I noticed the back garden looked trashed, covered in leaves, ought to clean it up and move the chairs out the way. This morning woke up at 7:30 to hear it was still raining. Rain that had woke me up at 3am. Mutter mutter.

Fog makes it a bitch to drive around the crowded streets of 'Highgate.' Still the colour of the leaves are quite pretty. Why is my car making a grinding noise?

This time last year I was less than a week away from leaving the country. This year I wish I was again. I'll still whine about the cost of my flat, combined with how I wish I was in New Orleans.

Heh, fair enough on the back garden - the leaves will have to be moved so that all that rain can escape down the drain :) But they're still quite pretty.

And now you mention it, I'd rather be in New Orleans too, on some level :)

(Or San Francisco or Vancouver, or Tokyo, or Budapest.)

Yeah would kinda suck if the drains blocked and we started flooding. I think we are just low enough that we would start to sink. Still would force the rats to swim I suppose.

True. Nothing else will, short of actually dropping them in the bath...

Lowness is a worry, yes - at some stage in the summer the outside edge of my carpet was actually getting damp, though I *hope* that was condensation. Rain seems to have stopped, so I can attack the garden with a sweeping brush this evening.

(When I get back from Parents' Night Mark 2, that is, at 8ish)

If you want, wouldn't worry too much about it though, it's not a massive concern right now :)

Must talk to Kev about the house though, there is damp in the study and think some of the house is leaking a bit.

I'll be in all night, acting irresponsibly and studying law
