My laptop is a big clunky thing, more than six years old. When I brought it home to Dublin a couple of years ago and took it out in the house of some hardware-geek friends, they burst out laughing and said "What is that, retro-chic gone mad?"

All this summer, as it heated up to table-melting temperatures in our blazing hot flat, I was sure it was about to die in a puff of smoke. Somehow the poor thing managed to soldier on... until today, when the floppy drive and the mouse buttons both stopped working simultaneously.

I think it's been bravely holding out until the novel was done, and now has decided it's accomplished its task and could die in peace. elethe, on the other hand, is far more cynical and thinks the laptop is saying "Ha! I'm going to die now just when you really need me!"

Whatever its motives are, though, I'd better get hold of a new one as soon as possible. Does anyone have a laptop they're finished with and would like to flog to me? Of course, what I'd really like is a snow-coloured iBook but I doubt that's going to happen any time soon.

I can get you a rather nice used Toshiba 700mhz for about £200 if that's any good. My good friend Steve lets me have them for an excellent price. They're the Satellite Pro 4600 - I have one and am more than happy with it.

Sorry darling, but I asked Steve and he has none at the moment, only a very old one which wouldn't be an improvement on your dead machine at all. I'll keep my ears open though and let you know if he gets any more in the near future.

I can lend you a laptop computer - my old one that's been dying steadily for years. I need to clean up its hard-drive some, and I should warn you that it is prone to nervous breakdowns - but if you like you can have it for two months at the very least (and possible forever, if I decide that Yug customs/excise people are going to charge me more than the thing is worth to bring into the country).

IBM ThinkPad 760EL - according to Google, 'a state of the art machine in 1998'. Win 95, Word 97, 48MB memory, 2GB hard disk, not sure how slow it is.
