Experiment Update 2

I spent today running round town, pulling letters out of my bag at random. Because it was indecisively raining, I had to abandon the 'in sight of a postbox' plan, so I put them in indoor or fairly sheltered places:

tokyo_mb: Your letter was left on a wall on Chrisp Street in East London.
clarisinda: On a chair in Chrisp Street Idea Store.
mouse262: In an East End pub called The Widow's Son.
cartographer: On a glass table in the lobby of 1 Canada Square (the tall, pointy Canary Wharf building).
casca_2u: On a Northern Line train at Highgate, heading north.
randalf, smorgasbord, boingley, sparktastic: all left in and around the British Museum by my esteemed research assistant elethe.
primavera: given to my new research assistant hoshuteki to be left somewhere in Brixton.
thessalian, I tried to leave yours on the tube at St John's Wood, but the whole bloody carriageful of people chased after me going 'you forgot your letter, you forgot your letter', and I had to look grateful at them. :) So points for social responsibility go to them, and I'll find somewhere else to leave yours!

D, I missed this on account of being away, but it's a wonderful idea to recreate the PG experiment. I'm green with envy that I didn't think of it myself and pitch it as a world-beating magazine feature :) x

I've been wondering if there's a story in it. I don't suppose you'd consider telling me where you'd pitch the thing if you were doing it? There's always Smoke, but that involves no money :)

I don't think anyone who I'd pitch it to would pay very well, if at all. Newspaper review sections might go for it, but it would probably have to co-incide with a Wodehouse anniversary or something to be deemed relevant :(

Actually it was too hard to do them all around the British museum. sparktastic was on a park bench in Bedford Square (post box opposite side of the park). I left one in an old-fashioned red phone box outside the British Museum (had to move the prostitute cards to put it there). There was a post box right next to that.

Annother was left at Kentish town station and one was sent on a number 43 bus, heading south from Highgate.

I felt so odd putting them places - like a spy (or even worse a terrorist) I got very paranoid. Had to be so furtive.

Forgot to mention that my envelope has been successfully placed at a carefully chosen location in SW9. Well, no, actually I left it in the Brixton Recreation Centre following one of my rare appearances at the gym. Have no idea how far it is to a post box, but it may be significantly closer to a bin. Fingers crossed.
