Buy. Buy more. Buy. And… be happy.

As of July 1st I will no longer live in Muswell Hill. At first I didn't mind moving on, but as always happens, as the days count down I’m seeing more and more things I love about here – the way I can stand on the bed, stick my head out the skylight and see way out to the east, the blue computer alcove with its little paper lanterns, the mirrorball, the funny old barber shop on Muswell Hill Broadway, even the weird leggy plant in the sittingroom.

Oh, well, enough with the maudlin. [livejournal.com profile] elethe and I have lots of stuff. Since we’re moving, and I’ll probably have to put most of mine in storage for the summer, it would make sense to rehome as much of it as possible. Money is also nice when you’re moving. So we’re thinking of having a garageless garage sale.

Some weekend day – we’re currently thinking Sunday the 19th of June, though this could change if public opinion’s against it – we’ll have an open house with wine and nibbles, and all the buyable stuff laid out so you can look through it. There'll also be stuff I'm giving away. You’re welcome to come over at any stage and hang out. No pressure to buy anything - it's also an excuse for a sort of house-cooling party - but if you see something you’d like to take home with you, so much the better.

[livejournal.com profile] elethe will be making her own list presently, though I imagine there’ll be lots and lots of DVDs on it. I’ll be offering books and CDs[1], a snow-coloured iMac (there’s nothing wrong with it and I’ll be sorry to part with it, it’s just that my laptop does everything it does but slightly faster), an acoustic guitar, clothes (some barely worn), board games, and lots of other random things. I’ll post up a proper list if there seems to be interest. (People can bagsy things for themselves in advance, of course.)

Edit: Oh, and! I also have a beech-finish Ikea corner bookshelf and a grey Ikea Benno 6-foot-tall CD rack. [livejournal.com profile] kauket has expressed an interest in the CD rack but in case she doesn't want it, feel free to shout out.

Does that sound interesting? Or is it ridiculous to attempt to have a garage sale with no garage, a car boot sale without the car? Opinions welcome.

[1] proceeds from many of the CDs go to the Transatlantic Librarians Fund

Sounds like a lot of fun...I shall try and be there at some stage.

where are you moving to, btw?

Thereby hangs a tale. I don't actually know yet.

Tell me I don't need a second Classic iMac, quick!

[identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't need a... oh, hang on. Sure you do!

I'll be asking about 200 quid for it. It was something like 1100 new, but that was in late 2001.

[identity profile] j4.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
As a confirmed shopaholic I think this is a storming idea. :-) And the date works for me, too, I think.

Where are you moving to?

[identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Good stuff. And see reply to absinthecity...

[identity profile] publicansdecoy.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Which board games?

-x-

[identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
A Buffy game missing a few bits, Kerplunk!, and a barely-used-at-all, quite new Dungeons & Dragons game - I'd like to keep that last, but it's bulky. Come to think of it, proceeds from that also go to the Transatlantic Librarians Fund.

I should come and rescue my bits that seem to have rehomed themselves there, shouldn't I? Be silly for you to have to move them...

So sad you are moving :(

[identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, it's a shame. But with Jo moving too the North London posse seems to be dissolving anyway :(

iMac iMac iMac. It's calling to me ;-(

Great idea, and if I go to [livejournal.com profile] marnameow's knitting thing in London that day, I'll certainly drop in and buy loads of stuff I don't really need say hi ;-)

[identity profile] secretrebel.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I want the iMac too, but why? I can't understand it, I have two computers already and yet I long for this one.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] bluedevi you can store anything you like in my attic (so long as it fits through the hatch). I even have some fine cardboard boxes to expedite such a plan.

I am in pretty desperate need of shelving and would like a look at that shelf, it's transporting it that might be the issue. Same for the CD rack.

Wine, you say?

[identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll see if I can find it on the ikea website for you, so you can have a look in advance. You probably would need to borrow someone with a car. And yes, I do say wine.

There are times I really, really miss owning a Mac... Do post a list.

Buggrit Millenium Hand and Fish, I'm in Leicester that weekend.

Can you put up a list?

Anyway, hope the move works out well; that being said, you'd have to work at it to find a nicer bit of Norf London than Muswell Hill.

[identity profile] zenithed.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a great plan - it'll be good to say goodbye to the flat, and homeless books and CDs are always welcome.

Always interested in cds...

we'll be the last north Londoners at this rate!

[identity profile] philipstorry.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I sense hot competition for the iMac...

Must... Resist... iMac...

And on a COMPLETELY unrelated note... What are the specs of the iMac? I tried to cheat by looking at http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html, but they did quite a few iMac models.

Something cheap that allows me to tinker with Mac OS X (even if slowly) is a remarkably tempting thing... ;-)

[identity profile] erming.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, well I've no plans to move out of North London...

[identity profile] verlaine.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sell my things as you see fit, but don't sell them for next-to-nothing just for the sake of it, as I currently plan to be back in London before too long. If you have any plans to put things in storage for a few months, I'm happy to pay for all of that.

Of course, if you're just going to throw out what you don't sell, in that case please do try and get anything you can for my stuff! ;)

[identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, I'm not going to sell them off for buttons, though it seems remarkably hard to get a straight answer out of second-hand CD shops as to what's a reasonable price. I'm not just thinking of storage costs but of bulk, weight, carrying and transporting in helpful people's cars, but on the other hand I'm loath to distribute your CD collection to the four winds. Hm.

Hello! Where are you moving to? the chances are I missed a livejournal entry about it as I don't update/read my friends list often enough... I am also interested in the iMac, but it looks like a lot of people are! I love buying second-hand stuff. How are you going to decide how much everything should cost? Wow if I had an iMac I could start thinking about getting an ipod. And then start thinking about having no money at all...

[identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm.. don't pin your hopes on the ipod - the iMac's running a too-old version of osX for it to work. You'd need to upgrade the OS. It's otherwise OK though.

Yeah, can take the bookshelf thing, will probably be very useful.

If you can get stuffed packed and sorted out a bit by next sunday (and maybe weekend after), I can ask A. to drive some of it to Oxford for storage

Gah! Torn between the difficulty in getting to Muswell Hill and the magnetic draw of unidentified CDs!
I shall have to add my voice to earlier cries for some breed of list, if you've time to type one up...
