Hmm. I've just looked through my interests and realised they're out of date. There are things in there that really don't seem to be part of me any more. I think it's time they were pruned a bit.

So what will get the chop?

clairol no. 122: I haven't dyed my hair for nearly three years now. Gosh. Half my hair is brown now, and that's more than half a foot of hair.
ebm: though I still love a few of the bands, I haven't heard an EBM song I liked in quite a while now.
new model army and dream disciples: nor have I listened to either of these in absolutely ages, though I still think they're good.

*stands back and scrutinises the list* Can we say post-goth?

And there's ian mcewan, who gets the boot because I could never get to the end of 'Atonement', even though he messes up the nice post-goth pattern.

Could this be a meme? This is how it could work: choose five interests you'd be willing to get rid of, list them and tell us why. It would be interesting to see how people change.

That is an excellent meme ideas but I can't even think of one interest to cull from my list. Maybe they're all too vague.

Interesting! (Pun accidental ;-)

I wasn't expecting to find any interests I could ditch, partly because I look at the list every now and again, and partly because in one of my previous tweakings of it, I got rid of all specific names of authors or directors or singers (apart from Tori Amos). Nevertheless, I'm willing to ditch these:

Henry VIII still interested in a passive sort of way, but that's it.

Nail varnish I've found myself hardly wearing nail varnish at all since acquiring my engagement ring. It's not deliberate, and I've made a couple of attempts to get back into the habit of wearing it most of the time, but they keep failing.

Pirates was an interest I added in the first flush of excitement after watching Peter Pan (hah! You thought I was going to say Pirates of the Caribbean didn't you?)

Science fiction... well, being an SF fan is a fairly big part of the way I see myself, and I still am a fan. I just don't actually read the books any more...

Hm. Mine are only about six months old, and I can't spread the idea any further, having a fairly meme-unsusceptible journal, but I could probably bear to part with... eh, quite a lot of them, actually; there are even more frivolous things like "alphabetical disorder" and "plural forms" than I remembered. But anyway:

acute angles: I have no idea what this was ever doing in the list. I quite like them, I suppose, in a vague indifferent sort of way.

book reviews: I still like collections of old reviews by a single writer, but new reviews in magazines and newspapers are interesting me less and less. I get a better idea of whether I'll like a book or not from actual real people, or a randomly selected page.

paint charts: Eh. They all have too many pastels.

umlauts: What? Umlauts? What? Also: plural forms? Why?

verdana: No idea what this is doing in there, either. Oh, yes I do - I was writing a story in which all of the characters were named after fonts (Felix and Perpetua Titling, for example), and Verdana was the heroine. I wonder what happened to that. It was rubbish, anyway.

I wish I'd thought of that.

Did they live on the island republic of San Serriffe?

I've never had more than two listed. And I'm not getting rid of either !

after reading your post I realised that I hadn't added enough, so in a reverse meme trend I have added the following:

Sherlock Holmes

I love detective stories but this character is the King of them all.

Loreena McKennit

Can't get enough of her version of the Lady of Shallott among other things.

The Sisters of Mercy

because I haven't completely got over goth yet.

Roger Zelazy

Still one of my favourite authors, although by all accounts this is only because I haven't read the second Amber series.

Tori Amos

Because she is a genius and a feminist. Oh and her music is great too.

I've got here "music, role playing., role-playing, roleplaying, rpg,"

I went for four synonyms of roleplaying, for some reason, and I doubt it occupies enough of my mind to really warrant the one, these days.

Music - well, I just don't nowadays. It's not like I don't have my computer permenantly plugged into the most sophisticated music acquisition systems known to man. I can have as much of it as I like. And i just don't listen anymore.

Oh I just culled five just a couple of days ago, does that count?

I removed most of the authors on my list:

Emily Dickinson, Emily Bronte, Edmund White, Tennessee Williams, Carson McCullers... my sad, tired list of reclusive chicks and 'different' dudes. I think it might mean I am ready for discovery new fave authors.

PS for some reason I unconsciously left in Meryvn Peake... Hmm... may be a call for me to read him again. Go Gormenghast!

umm, I've only got six listed and I like them. Can I keep them and promise to purge 5 at a later date?
